Selected Bulgarian authors from the second half of the 20th century
Enakor Auction No. 47, April 2025

Auction No. 47 of the Enakor Auction House includes half of the 500 artworks in the collection of Rouzha Marinska (1944-2022) – the great art historian, expert on Bulgarian fine art, outstanding teacher and our close friend. Her collection (Dimitrov 2024) contains prints, paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures and photography. The first part of the presentation included Bulgarian artists who received their art education before 1948. In the second part we present the Bulgarian artists who received their artistic education after 1948, who worked mainly in the socialist period, for whom Marinska wrote special texts and studies, compiled catalogues, organized and opened exhibitions, and gave speeches.
Vladimir Dimitrov writes about Marinska’s attitude towards contemporary artists in the introduction to the catalogue of the collection (Dimitrov 2024:7): “Rouzha Marinska saw the talent of a number of contemporary artists, whom she supported whenever she could. She helped them to organize exhibitions, which she opened, wrote texts for catalogues, and most of all – she communicated with them in order to reach as deeply as she could into the inner world of the artist in order to understand, present and interpret it.” In relation to this unconditional support of Marinska for her contemporary artists, the largest part of her collection took shape (Dimitrov 2024:7): “Rouzha Marinska’s collection contains mainly the names of her favourite artists – her contemporaries with whom she worked, whom she supported and advised, for whom she wrote, whose exhibitions she opened. The largest part of the collection is of works she received as gifts as a sign of respect from her favourite artists, collectors and people close to her.“
As with the authors presented in the first part of the article, we can make a similar observation with contemporary authors. We know that about three quarters of the works in these groups in the collection are by artists whose work Rouzha Marinska has valued, supported with guidance, opening exhibitions, organizing projects and publications. It is about them that she writes: “That is why I have thought and written with love about Bulgarian artists and what they have created. Of course, circumstances have come together in such a way that not all the artists I value have become the subject of my research. Nevertheless, all those I have written about or spoken about publicly have been chosen by me, by my will. In all of them, I have seen high models of artistic thinking and original imagination. I owe all of them a debt of gratitude for giving me the opportunity to develop my own understanding of art.” (Marinska 2020a:I, 10).
Bulgarian authors who received their artistic education after 1948.
Todor Panayotov (1927-1989) is one of the most beloved and most studied authors (Marinska 1988a; 1990a; 2009a; 2014; 2017a). Three of his works are included in the auction- “Landscape”, tempera (Fig. 1) and two lithographs, “Happy Holiday}, 1987 (Fig. 2) and “Horsemen” (Fig. 3), the latter published (Marinska 2020:II, 224). The entire Panayotov family of artists were her favourites and were always displayed in her home. Todor’s sister, Anastasia Panayotova (b. 1931), is also highly appreciated (Marinska 2015a; 2017b:), represented by three paintings in ink, watercolour and gouache: “After Tsvetaeva’s Poems”, 1983. (Fig. 4), “Figures with a Bird”, 1984 (Fig. 5), and “The Enchanted Room”, 2015 (Fig. 6), the latter published (Marinska 2020:II, 226).

Rouzha Marinska drew attention (Marinska 1994) to the almost unknown at that time extremely talented artist Ivanka Sokerova (1926-1993), from whom a print of the graphic “Rhodope Maiden”, 1970s is available (Fig. 7). Nikola Terziev-Zhelyazoto (1927-2006) has attracted interest (Marinska 1987) for his works in the Pantheon of the Revivalists in Rousse, an impressive sculptural project of which is offered in the auction – Project for a female figure for the Pantheon in Rousse, c. 1977, plaster (Fig. 8). Marinska has insightful texts (Marinska 1985; 1986a) on Stanka Dimitrova (1931-1996), represented by an ink drawing, “Composition,” 1985 (Fig. 9). There is a major study (Marinska 2009) on the portraits of the composer Petko Stainov, which devotes much attention to the process of creating the composer’s portrait by Dimitar Arnaοudov (1933-1989). One of his many preparatory drawings published in the study (Marinska 2020:II, 116) became part of her collection, Preparatory Drawing for a Portrait of Petko Stainov, 1971 (Fig. 10).

Vasil Chakarov-Chak (1934-2018) was one of the greatest favourites of Ruzha Marinska (Marinska 2007a, 2021, 2022; Dicheva 2021; Daskalov 2022). In recent years, she has been working on a long-term project to present his work – it began in 2019 and was scheduled to end in 2024 (Dicheva 2021). Marinska prepared catalogues and curated exhibitions in Samokov, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, Sliven, Zheravna (Vassileva 2020) and in Sofia (Dicheva 2021). The last exhibition she curated and presented was his, “Vasil Chakuroff-Chak: Cartoons, Collages and Caricatures”, at the Museum of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo in October 2022 (Daskalov 2022). During the preparations for his major retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of his birth, she passed from this world. Included in the auction are two of the many works Chakarov had gifted her (Dycheva 2021):” with a Rooster”, from the ‘Village Life’ series, 1979, drypoint (Fig. 11) and “Landscape from Bagrenzi”, 1978, pencil, watercolour (Fig. 12). Marinska wrote (Marinska 2007b) about Hristo Simeonov (1935-2020), represented by “Still Life”, 2000, gouache (Fig. 13); and also (Marinska 1976) about Marie-Therese Gospodinova (1939-2014), “Late Fruits,” oil (Fig. 14).

Rouzha Marinska has written many times (Marinska 1990b; 2009c) about Marko Monev (1939-2004), represented by the oil painting “The Theater in Rousse”, 1986 (Fig. 15), exhibited in a central place in Rouzha’s living room. She wrote even more texts (Marinska 1986b; 1995; 2007c, 2015b) about her very close friend and particularly highly regarded as an artist, Vasilka Moneva (b. 1945), represented in the auction by the oil paintings “Interior”, 2009/2011 (Fig. 16) and “Still Life with Dishes” (Fig. 17).

Artists for whom Marinska writes with inspiration are: (Marinska 2004) Stefan Markov (1940-2000), included with the lithograph “In the Light of the Lighthouse III”, 1997 (Fig. 18); also (Marinska 2011a) Ivan Dimov (1943-2024), represented with the work (Fig. 19) ” A Japanese Woman”, 2011, watercolour, coloured pencils (published in Marinska 2020:II, 229 and exhibited on a separate wall in her home). She has written (Marinska 2000) about Ivan Gazdov (b. 1945), represented by “Worship of the Magi. Masaccio,” from the “Cover Classic” series, serigraph, with dedication (fig. 20).

She was inspired (Marinska 2013) by Krasimira Drenska (b. 1947), Composition, 1995, tempera, pencil (Fig. 21); (Marinska 2019) by Radina Bliznakova (b. 1947), Landscape, colored pencils (Fig. 22); (Marinska 1998a) by Mariana Raynova (b. 1948), Paris Impression, 2009, collage, painted silk (Fig. 23). One of Rouzha Marinska’s most highly esteemed artists, and perhaps the one with the most publications (Marinska 1975; 1976b; 1985b; 1988b; 1989; 1996a), is Nadezhda Kouteva (b. 1948), represented in the auction by her watercolour Bozhentsi, 1975 (Fig. 24).

The auction includes a large number of artworks by Zahari Kamenov (b. 1949), about whom Marinska has repeatedly written with appreciation and recognition (Marinska 2009; 2010a; 2011b; 2018). All of these were exhibited in key locations in her home: ‘Composition’, etching (Fig. 25); ‘Man with Dog’, dry pastel (Fig. 26); ‘Composition’ from the Garden series, 2015 (Fig. 27); the magical ceramic sculpture ”Unnamed” (Fig. 28); the terracotta ‘”Female Figure”, (Fig. 29); and the print ”Based on Boris Hristov” (Fig. 30).

Rouzha Marinska wrote an article “Bulgarian Artists and Photography” (Marinska 2006), which, among other insightful texts, has a section on Iskra Tsankova-Siama (b. unidentified-2019). The text is about her photography, enhanced by an author’s technique of superimposing images, of which the auction offers one work from the series “Humans and Monkeys”, 2005, photographed in Myanmar (Burma), (Fig. 31). The artist Hristo Alexiev (b. 1950), certainly impressed Marinska (Marinska 2005a; 2010b), both for the mind and qualities of his work and for his graphic “Portrait of Sirach Skitnik”, 1990 (Fig. 32), Rouzha’s favourite artist-intellectual. Edmond Demirdzhian (1951-2009) has been included in review texts for exhibitions, but has also attracted her attention for more special projects (Marinska 2002a:93-95). Demirdzhian’s “Self-Portrait Composition,” 1981 (fig. 33), is present in the auction. Milko Bozhkov (b. 1953), is another artist of this period for whom R. Marinska has repeatedly written in general and special presentations (Marinska 1991). Bozhkov is represented in the auction by the drawing “Three Trees, Three Clouds”, 2010, pencil, oil on canvas (Fig. 34). The artist-intellectual Andrey Daniel (1952-2020) has not only been regularly included in review texts, being noticed from his earliest appearances, but has also been the subject of special research attention on more than one occasion with very high estimates (Marinska 1983/2; 1997a). Daniel is represented in the auction by the magnificent oil on canvas “The Stairs of the Parthenon”, 1981 (Fig. 35).

From the presence of many works by Svilen Blazhev (b. 1953) in Marinska’s collection, we can hypothesize that he was one of her favourite contemporary artists whom she supported. This is confirmed by the many references to him in survey texts, but also by texts written specifically about him and speeches given at exhibition openings (Marinska 1999; 2002a; 2002b). Three works by Blazhev are included in the auction: ‘”Composition”, 1994, oil, sand, canvas (Fig. 36); “Naked Woman with Cat”, mixed media (Fig. 37) and “Christmas Card”, 2007, mixed media (Fig. 38). Stanislav Pamukchiev (b. 1953) seems to be in the same category of beloved and supported contemporary artists (Marinska 1996b). Three of his works are available: “Toilet”, 1983, oil (Fig. 39) and two abstract ink drawings, 1998 (Fig. 40).

Svetla Georgieva (b. 1955) is represented in the auction with three of her six works in the collection – the etchings “Sun Tree”, 1988 (Fig. 41) and “Secret”, 1982 (Fig. 42), as well as the ink drawing “Boats”, 1972 (Fig. 43), have also been the subject of special study (Marinska 1990c). In the article cited above, Marinska devotes her most attention to analysis and gives the highest praise specifically to the work offered at auction, “Sun Tree,” which was exhibited in the guest room of her home.

The sculptor Stefan Lyutakov (b. 1955) is present with four works: ‘”Composition”, 1997, bronze (Fig. 44); “Box for Secrets”, cast iron (Fig. 45); “Awakening”, 2019, sheet metal, plasma cutting (Fig. 46) and “Landscape from Dobrudzha”, iron, wood (Fig. 47). The extremely high mark of R. Marinska’s appreciation of him can be read in both general presentations of exhibitions and gallery displays and in her insightful analyses in special studies of his work (Marinska 1998). His artworks were displayed throughout her home.

Marinska appreciated and supported (Marinska 2016) Vesko Velev (b. 1956), represented by the drawing “Angel”, 1994 (Fig. 48). She has written texts and opened exhibitions (Marinska 2005b) of Atanas Hranov (b. 1961), represented by the sculpture “The Seventh Hill,” bronze, granite (Fig. 49a-b). She has been impressed (Marinska 2002a) by the works of Veselin Nachev (b. 1958), represented by the oil canvas Introvert, 2011 (Fig. 50); by the works (Marinska 1998c; 2010c) of Rumen Zhekov (1960-2022), represented by the print (Fig. 51) “Scars and shadows”.

Just a few of the many works by Svetozar Benchev (b. 1962) in the collection of R. Marinska, are presented in the auction: Object I” (Fig. 53); the ceramic and metal sculpture “Watermelon Slice”, 2018 (Fig. 54), the drawing “Bird in a Cage”, 1989 (Fig. 55). The large number of his works in the collection show that Marinska highly valued and strongly supported him from the very beginning of his artistic career. She has expressed her understanding of his intellectual and visual-verbal work through exquisite and profound interpretations – in numerous texts, including catalogue presentations and exhibition opening speeches (Marinska 2002a; 2009e; 2012).

Marinska highly appreciated the talent and supported Nikolay (Kolyo) Karamfilov (1963-2014). Apart from mentions in review articles (Marinska 1995b), she has special research texts about him (moreover at his very young age), as well as opening speeches at his exhibitions (Marinska 1997; 1998c; 2008; 2010d), she considers him “one of the strongest personalities of the generation”. Only three of his many works in the collection are included in the auction – “Composition”, 2004, ink, brush (Fig. 56); “Torso in Back”, 1995, ink (Fig. 57) and the oil painting “Folkmotive”, 1989 (Fig. 58).

The Impact of Rouzha Marinska on the Artistic Processes in Bulgaria in the Second Half of the 20th Century
In this group of works from the collection of Rouzha Marinska in the auction №47 of “Enakor”, we present works of contemporary artists, most of whom she has met, communicated with them, visited their studios to enter into the depths of their creative process, to understand and appraise them from every possible perspective. In this group of artists are those for whom she has written special research and presentation texts, curated and opened their exhibitions, where she has spoken, supported them on their way, advised them, encouraged them and guided them towards new explorations and experiments. Evidence of her work are the many dedicatory inscriptions on the backs of the paintings.
The artists with whom she interacted expressed their gratitude for her support by gifting her their works. These particular works were among Rouzha’s most intensely experienced, as she writes – emotionally and intellectually (Marinska 2020a:I, 9-10). With this visionary work with dozens of contemporary artists, R. Marinska has undoubtedly had an extremely strong influence both on the individual creative process and explorations of her selected artists and on the directions of artistic processes in Bulgaria in the second half of the twentieth and the first two decades of the twenty-first century. The significance of her impact on these processes has yet to be explored and evaluated, based on both her writings and the works of contemporary artists in her personal collection.
In the auction of works from the collection of Rouzha Marinska, you will be able to acquire highly appreciated, experienced and deeply meaningful for the great art historian artworks of contemporary artists, whom she has given invaluable influence and support, and who were her close friends. We are setting very affordable starting prices for the lots in the auction, with the idea that these special works of Bulgarian art, which bear the memory of Ruzha’s bright spirit, keen intellect and passionate love for art, will reach as many of her friends, students and admirers as possible, along with connoisseurs of Bulgarian art.
